"Our goal is for people to hear about us, to maybe erase that social stigma. There are very few people like us, there are maybe 100-150 people diagnosed with throat cancer every year in Croatia. And in my experience, most people when they see me with this thing in my throat, they are apprehensive. It’s easier when people know what this is about, and when they do they treat us differently. So, the plan is to keep performing."

12. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Veseljko Stojak, member of the choir without vocal cords, ‘The Optimists’:
"When something like this happens to a person, they are shocked, and also depressed, it takes a bit of mental fortitude to go through all this. And it turns out that really the best therapy is to hang out with others with the same problem. I was never a fan of the idea of support groups, but the fact is that people who have the same problem can understand you best. And singing is an amazing therapy for lungs, because we need to exercise our lungs, and keep them active."

19. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Tamara Zivkovic Ivanovic, speech therapy specialist and leader of the choir ‘The Optimists’:
"I had a post-op patient who I had taught to speak, and one time he burst into tears. I told him he was speaking really well, that he was intelligible, we were at the end of therapy sessions. But he started crying, saying that it’s his grandson’s birthday soon and that he couldn’t sing for him. Frankly, music means a lot to me, too, whether dancing or music, it helped me get through some problems in life. So that was the saddest thing ever to hear, for me. I was left reeling in my office, and I thought to myself, why not try giving back that part of life to people who suffered through laryngectomy. If they can speak without the larynx, then they can sing, too. It’s not a real singing voice because they have no vocal cords, they can’t be professionals – but it’s still a form of singing without using vocal cords. That’s how the idea was born."
