STORYLINE:
A pregnant woman and four of her children were among the dead brought to a central Gaza hospital on Wednesday after an Israeli airstrike, Palestinian medical officials said.
Records at the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said the mother was six months pregnant, while seven months was written in red pen on the shroud her body was wrapped in on the floor of the morgue.
The Israeli strike hit a house in the Bureij urban refugee camp late on Wednesday morning, hospital staff said.
Funeral prayers were held for the dead before their bodies were carried away for burial.
Israel’s retaliatory invasion of Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas’ October 7 attack has killed more than 41-thousand Palestinians and wounded more than 95-thousand, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and militants, but says over half of the dead were women and children.
Months of intense air and ground assaults have razed entire housing blocks to the ground; researchers who study satellite imagery estimate nearly 60% of buildings in the Gaza Strip have likely been damaged since the start of the war.
Israel vowed to destroy Hamas after October 7, when its militants killed some 1,200 people and abducted 250 others.
