1. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Firas Abiad, Lebanon’s caretaker Health Minister:
"Up until this moment, the Ministry of Health has registered 558 martyrs, including 50 children and 94 women. This honestly contradicts the claims made by the Israeli enemy that they are targeting fighters—claims that have nothing to do with reality. Honestly, unfortunately, what we are seeing is that the majority of those who fell as a result of yesterday’s aggressions are civilians in their homes."

STORYLINE:
Lebanon’s caretaker Health Minister Firas Abiad says that the death toll of Israeli airstrikes on different parts of Lebanon since early Monday has reached 558, including 50 children and 94 women.

"This honestly contradicts the claims made by the Israeli enemy that they are targeting fighters—claims that have nothing to do with reality," Abiad said.

"Honestly, unfortunately, what we are seeing is that the majority of those who fell as a result of yesterday’s aggressions are civilians in their homes," he added.

He said four paramedics from the al-Risala Scouts were among the dead.

Israel and Hezbollah traded strikes again Tuesday, a day after a massive Israeli bombardment killed nearly 500 people, sent thousands fleeing from southern Lebanon and put the two sides on the brink of all-out war.

Displaced families slept in shelters hastily set up in schools in Beirut and the coastal city of Sidon.

With hotels quickly booked to capacity or rooms priced beyond the means of many families, those who did not find shelter slept in their cars, in parks or along the seaside.

Monday’s escalation came after a particularly heavy exchange of fire Sunday.

Hezbollah launched around 150 rockets, missiles and drones into northern Israel in retaliation for strikes that killed a top commander and dozens of fighters.
