"He would walk down the hall and people would say: we love your jacket. And he would say, thank you, I have leukemia. You know, he became empowered. And he wasn’t like oh, I have leukemia. He became empowered that these people loved him and sent him these patches. And one day he turned to us and said, I would love to give patches to other kids just like me."

"I felt like it was a suit of armor because I knew people were, like, looking out for me. They gave me positive vibes. People… I knew people loved me. And it’s just a good thing to have, when you’re going through such a hard time."

"Now how it works is a child hears about our program, they go pick out from an online gallery and multiple patches. We sew them onto a jacket or tote. And what this is they become part of a community. And (they) really found that they belong to a group. And kind of in many ways it’s not really about patches. It’s about love and support and community and something tangible to represent to them that they belong."

"When a child gets the jacket and tote, we also, send their parents a box of milestone patches, and those are the 13 most common milestones a child has to go through when they’re in treatment, whether it’s radiation or, you know, getting a lumbar puncture or high fever. We received one message from a family that said, you know, Jimmy can’t wait to get his first treatment on Friday because he’s going to earn his gorilla patch. And the gorilla patch was his chemo patch. So there’s many stories like that."

"It is hard, but I feel if you have like a positive attitude, which I know sometimes is kind of hard to have, you can get through it and you got this."

STORYLINE:
When Oliver Burkhardt underwent leukemia treatment at age 9, he’d enter the hospital wearing his patch-covered denim jacket. Pokemon. Superman. NASA. Police, fire, military. Classic rock bands. About 50 patches sewn on by his parents, selected from thousands sent by well-wishers worldwide after his dad made a social media request.
The jacket became Oliver’s suit of armor, deflecting his disease — and the nasty side effects of his treatment. It sparked conversations with nurses. His parents decorated their own jackets, showing they are a team. The patches made Oliver feel special.
“I knew people were looking out for me, they gave me positive vibes, that people loved me,” said Oliver, now 13 and in remission.
The Oliver Patch Project was born.
"It is hard, but I feel if you have like a positive attitude, which I know sometimes is kind of hard to have, you can get through it and you got this,” he said.
