STORYLINE:
Cuba experienced on Thursday night its worst day of electricity shortage so far this year, by leaving nearly half of the island in darkness for hours, officials said on Friday.
Authorities of Unión Eléctrica (UNE), the state-owned company responsible for electricity generation and distribution, said the company could only produce half of the estimated electricity needed.
“We were only able to supply 1,514 megawatts, which is the most significant impact we have had in recent times," said Engineer Lázaro Guerra, the director of electricity department at the Ministry of Energy.
Authorities blamed the situation over a lack and fuel and of parts to repair plants that produce electricity.
The streets of the capital Havana were darker than usual. People relied only on the bright full moon to guide their steps along the popular sea wall.
The lack of electricity generation was significant even for the usual standards in Cuba, which has suffered severe electricity shortages in recent years.
These shortages can last for more than eight hours, forcing the government to implement scheduled power outages – a calendar that informs the population when they will not have power.
Guerra stated that the blackout was caused by malfunctions in the thermoelectric plants and a shortage of fuel for the power plants.
Authorities have assured that the electricity grid will be back to normal by Friday, as fuel is being supplied to the various plants across the country.
During the particularly hot Cuban summer, there is usually a high demand for electricity, especially in the afternoon and evening.
This demand increases as families use electricity for cooking in many parts of the country.
Complaints about electricity have in the past turn into protests.
