1. SOUNDBITE (English) Kareem Chehayeb, The Associated Press:
"At least 9 people were killed and 300 injured by a new wave of device explosions, Lebanon’s health ministry said. This time, apparently targeting walkie talkies belonging to members of Hezbollah across Lebanon. The explosions were first heard at funerals for members of the powerful group who died Tuesday after hundreds of pagers exploded almost simultaneously in parts of Lebanon and Syria. The incident also comes a day before Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, is scheduled to speak about the last wave of explosions as tensions continue to boil. A senior official from Hezbollah was present at one of the funerals in Beirut’s southern suburbs today, where he reiterated Hezbollah’s vows to retaliate against Israel. The Israeli military declined comment on both incidents. However, Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant declared the start of what he called a “new phase” of the war, as Israel focuses its attention lesson on Hamas and The Gaza Strip, and more towards Hezbollah. Now, these devices for Hezbollah are a means to sidestep what’s believed to be intensive Israeli electronic surveillance on Lebanese telephone networks, especially as clashes continue for over 11 months. The international community is still scrambling to cease hostilities, as they fear the on going exchange could spiral into a full-scale war, and could spill over across countries in the Middle East."

STORYLINE:
Walkie-talkies and solar equipment exploded in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon Wednesday in an apparent second wave of attacks targeting devices, a day after pagers used by Hezbollah blew up, state media and officials for the militant group said.
At least 9 people were killed and more than 300 wounded in the second wave, the Health Ministry said.
In Wednesday’s attacks, several blasts were heard at a funeral in Beirut for three Hezbollah members and a child killed by exploding pagers the day before.
The attacks — which were widely believed to be carried out by Israel targeting Hezbollah but have also killed civilians — have hiked fears that the two sides’ simmering conflict could escalate into all-out war.
