STORYLINE:
An art event in Tangier over the weekend offered visitors a unique opportunity to explore some of the Moroccan city’s remarkable yet long-closed historical sites.

Marking its 10th anniversary, "Being Here" merged Tangier’s cultural heritage with contemporary artistic expression.

The event, held every two years, brought together more than 60 artists from across Morocco as well as from France.

Organizers included "dancers, choreographers, actors, and visual artists from various disciplines," said Najoua al-Hitmi, the event’s organizer.

"The principle, as always, was to discover places that were usually closed to the public," she added.

Each artist brought their own vision to different venues, transforming them into art canvases with distinct approaches.

French multimedia artist Fred Chemama turned one of the halls of the 17th-century Mechouar Palace into an interactive space, where he put on a video installation that encouraged visitor participation.

"The message is an invitation to creativity, dreams, and imagination—a form of collective poetry," he said.

For Moroccan singer Noussayra Lahlou, who took part in the event, "it was a wonderful experience."
