STORYLINE:
A Taiwanese company on Wednesday said that it authorized its brand on the pagers that exploded in Lebanon and Syria but that another company based in Budapest manufactured them.
Pagers used by the militant group Hezbollah exploded near-simultaneously in Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday, killing at least nine people, including an 8-year-old girl, and wounding nearly 3,000.
Taiwan’s Gold Apollo said the pagers had been manufactured by BAC Consulting KFT, which was authorized to use its trademark in some regions.
“According to the cooperation agreement, we authorize BAC to use our brand trademark for product sales in designated regions, but the design and manufacturing of the products are solely the responsibility of BAC,” Gold Apollo said in a statement.
Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have blamed Israel for what appeared to be a sophisticated remote attack.
A U.S. official said Israel briefed the U.S. on the operation – in which small amounts of explosive secreted in the pagers were detonated – on Tuesday after it was concluded.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the information publicly.
