"On an average day, we have 500,000 visitors to Oxford Street, contributing about 22 billion pounds towards our economy. But the street is underperforming. I want this street to overperform, and one way we will do that is by pedestrianising the street."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London:
"Well look, we know there are people who drive to this part of London. We know people like using the busses and taxis and so forth. But we also know the vacancy rates on this street are huge. 14% of shops are sitting empty. We also know some big retailers have left Oxford Street like Topshop, like House of Fraser, like Debenhams. So we’re going to be attracting big flagship stores back. We now have the Elizabeth Line, one of the world’s finest rail lines, if not the finest rail line, serving this community, Bond Street Station, Tottenham Court Road Station. That means there are alternatives for people to come to Oxford Street that weren’t in the past. That will mean that people who have got concerns about how they get there can be, you know, addressed. But also it will mean that we can have a public realm that is world class, that is green, that is healthy, that is safe, but also leads to increased footfall spending more in the shops, the shops doing better and reduce vacancies."

STORYLINE:
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on Tuesday launched proposals to transform the city’s iconic Oxford Street into a "world class" public realm which is "green," "healthy," "safe" and increases footfall and spending in shops.
The plans include pedestrianizing the road between Marble Arch and Oxford Circus, one of the world’s busiest shopping areas.
Khan and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner visited John Lewis on Oxford Street on Tuesday.
"On an average day, we have 500,000 visitors to Oxford Street, contributing about 22 billion pounds towards our economy. But the street is underperforming," the mayor said, adding that his proposals would help revive the area, which lost big retailers such as Topshop, House of Fraser and Debenhams.
While 14% of shops on Oxford Street are sitting empty, the addition of the popular Elizabeth Line to the area’s public transport options and the proposal for pedestrianization could lead to shops doing better, Khan said.
