Polls have just closed in a tight election in the eastern German state of Brandenburg. The incumbent Social Democrat party has an extremely slight lead on the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, according to early exit polls. The election has been a hard-fought race between the two parties. Exit polls put the center-left Social Democrats on 31 percent of the vote, while the AfD is on 30 percent. The AfD results appear to add to their success in the eastern state of Thuringia earlier this month. Their win there was the biggest success for a German far-right party since the Second World War.
