"It’s not just a psychological thriller or a horror film. It’s really about the cycle of generational trauma and how if we don’t sort of get healed, we just pass it along and along and along, and how painful it is to watch someone or to witness someone suffering from that kind of trauma, being locked inside that trauma. And I also like the idea when I read the script that you don’t really know, is mom a schizophrenic? Is she suffering with real mental illness or is this evil actually real? As I was reading, I never quite understood what was real and what wasn’t. And either by the time the movie’s over, there’s still arguments to not really understand it, know what was real and what wasn’t real. And that certainly interested me. And to play a different kind of mama, a different kind of mother I thought was really interesting for me as an actor to play."
