"I strongly condemn the US House of Representatives for making use of the so-called Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act to slander the Hong Kong laws on safeguarding national security and also smear the human rights situation in Hong Kong. These are political tactics to suppress the development of China and also Hong Kong. These are shameless and ugly political tactics."

STORYLINE:
Hong Kong’s leader John Lee hit out at America Tuesday over the status of Hong Kong’s three offices in the US.

At a regular press conference, Lee said that US legislative attention to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices are "shameless and ugly political tactics."

Hong Kong’s government earlier said the U.S. House of Representatives twisted facts in an attack on the city as it passed a bill that could close its representative offices in America, while Beijing threatened to take countermeasures if they are shuttered.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act was part of a series of China-related legislative proposals being scrutinized by the House last week. Many of the proposals appear to have both Republican and Democratic support, reflecting a strong consensus that congressional actions are needed to counter Beijing.

Hong Kong is officially a Special Administrative Region of China. When Britain gave Hong Kong back to China in 1997, the territory was guaranteed a "high degree of autonomy" together with other freedoms not usually available in mainland China.

Since 2020, Hong Kong authorities have often accused other countries of "smearing" or "slandering" Hong Kong.

Also in 2020, the Chinese Communist Party government in Beijing imposed a new National Security Law on Hong Kong.
