"We welcome any steps to stop the bloodshed as soon as possible and ensure a sustainable, permanent cease-fire. And we are seeking the same in the UN Security Council, acting in parallel with our Egyptian friends. The problem is that the United States does not want to pass any decisions that would seriously imply what everyone wants – an end to the bloodshed."

7. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister:
"And just as it (U.N. Security Council’s resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza) was accepted on such an empty piece of paper, so it remains such an empty piece of paper now. No promises of the United States were fulfilled. It does not mean that we should stop our efforts. And if the mediation that Egypt is actively engaged in with several other Arab countries, if this mediation leads to that result, we will only be glad."

STORYLINE:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday accused the U.S. of blocking U.N. Security Council resolutions on a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Speaking after talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Lavrov said Russia welcomed Egyptian mediation efforts pushing for a cease-fire in the 11-month-long war.

"We welcome any steps to stop the bloodshed, " Lavrov said, adding that Russia is seeking the same at the U.N. Security Council.

"The problem is that the United States does not want to pass any decisions that would seriously imply what everyone wants – an end to the bloodshed," he said.

Lavrov also said Russia abstained from the vote on the U.S.-sponsored resolution endorsing a cease-fire plan but it didn’t result in any breakthroughs.

"And just as it was accepted on such an empty piece of paper, so it remains such an empty piece of paper now," Lavrov said. "No promises of the United States were fulfilled."

Cease-fire talks have repeatedly bogged down as Israel and Hamas also accuse each other of making new and unacceptable demands.

Hamas has demanded a lasting cease-fire and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza as part of any agreement to release the scores of hostages it still holds from the Oct. 7 attack.
