STORYLINE:
Over a hundred volunteers on Saturday took part in a civilian preparedness drill that trained civilians how to respond to emergency disasters in New Taipei City.
The drill was organized by Forward Alliance, a Taiwanese national security and civil defense think tank, and Spirit of America, a leading U.S. humanitarian NGO dedicated to supporting troops and diplomats worldwide.
The drill simulated large scale explosions in the city and included firefighters, emergency responders and trained volunteers treating mock wounds on participants.
Taka Kao, a 30-year-old self-employed designer said she wanted to take part in the drills to bolster her confidence in case she is faced with a real disaster in the future.
“Earthquakes are frequent in Taiwan. We also have volcanoes, landslides and typhoons. I have always been scared of natural disasters,” she said.
Taiwanese Vice-President Bi-khim Hsiao also took part in the exercise.
“I believe no Taiwanese wants to see disaster happening," she said.
"Therefore, all the efforts we are doing today are aimed at preventing disasters to happen. Although we don’t want disasters to happen, they still might come to us,” she added.
