STORYLINE:
Around 500 police officers in boats and on foot are on standby for the visit to the Italian city of Venice of Pope Francis on Sunday.
Thousands of pilgrims are expected to attend Pope Francis’ mass in St Mark’s Square.
During the day Francis will also meet female prisoners and Catholic youngsters.
The reason he is meeting the prisoners is because the Holy See’s pavilion for this year’s Venice Biennale is in a women’s jail.
And through a deal with the Italian Justice Ministry, inmates have worked alongside artists.
It’s the first time a pope has visited the Biennale and it has given the 60th edition of the world’s longest running international art exhibit added publicity.
According to the Patriarch of Venice, Monsignor Francesco Moraglia, the key word of the papal trip will be “peace.”
Pope Francis has frequently spoken out about the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
