3. SOUNDBITE (French) Philippe Jost, Notre Dame reconstruction chief:
“’It is a beautiful event, the return of the bells and the voice of the cathedral, which will be able to ring in a few weeks. The bells will now be hoisted to the top of the north tower, and we will carry out tests so that they can ring for the cathedral’s reopening. We are of course waiting for the reopening for them to toll in full."

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Olivier Ribadeau-Dumas, rector of Notre Dame cathedral:
”There will be a blessing of the bells. They were consecrated in 2013, when they were made (for the cathedral’s 250th anniversary). Today I will to bless them before they are hoisted to the belfry, and so pray, bless the crowd and bless them, with incense. Because incense is the sign of all the admiration we can have for the bells and also of the sacred symbol they represent, because they call upon people to come together and pray."

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Olivier Ribadeau-Dumas, rector of Notre Dame cathedral:
”It’s a moving moment. It’s surely one of the last great moments before the reopening of the cathedral. The last big moment will be November 15 with the return of the Notre Dame de Paris statue, which will enter anew into the cathedral after being pulled out five years ago.”

STORYLINE:
Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is getting its bells back, just in time for the medieval landmark’s reopening following a devastating 2019 fire.

A convoy of trucks bearing the restored bells pulled into the huge worksite surrounding the cathedral Thursday on an island in the Seine River.

They will be blessed in a special ceremony inside the cathedral before being hoisted to hang in the monument’s twin towers for the Dec. 8 reopening.

”It’s an extremely important moment. We see that people are happy to see the bells, which are a sign that the cathedral will again vibrate and that its voice will be heard again. A sign of the call to prayer, and a sign of coming together, coming together around all those who want to pray and coming together around important events in the life of the country,” said Rector Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, wearing a hard hat before entering the church to bless the bells.

While construction on the cathedral began in the 12th century, the bronze bells damaged in the fire are from the 21st century.

They were built according to historical tradition to replace older bells that had become discordant, and installed to mark the 850th anniversary of the cathedral.

The cathedral’s roof and spire, which collapsed in the fire, have been replaced, and scaffolding is being gradually removed from the site.
