Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced Wednesday her bid to run in the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership race.

As the second female candidate, she will run for party leader in the election on 27 September to succeed Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

"Following Mr. Fumio Kishida’s announcement not to run, I made a decision after some serious thoughts. I will stand for the leadership election," Kamikawa announced at a news conference.

"As the prime minister of Japan, I will not turn my back to difficulties, and with the people of Japan I want to build a new country," she added.

The internal election will only include the party’s parliamentarians and its 1.1 million members and must be held by the end of September, which marks the end of Kishida’s three-year term.
