STORYLINE:
The European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell visited Egypt’s Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip on Monday and called for the border to be opened to enable humanitarian aid to get through and the wounded to be treated at hospitals.
He said the EU was ready to offer logistical help to enable the border to be open.
He also urged countries to do "more and (be) quicker" to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling the situation a human-made tragedy.
He stressed that the EU will continue supporting the Palestinians but that a political solution was needed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last Wednesday that Israel must keep open-ended control of Gaza’s border with Egypt, digging in on his stance on an issue that has threatened to derail cease-fire efforts.
Netanyahu’s comments came as the United States is developing a new proposal for a cease-fire and hostage release, hoping to break a long deadlock and bring an end to the nearly 11-month-old war.
