STORYLINE:
Pope Francis received a raucous welcome Monday when he arrived in East Timor as it celebrates the anniversary of its recovery from a bloody and traumatic independence battle.

Timorese waved Vatican and Timorese flags and shouted “Viva el Papa!” as he passed by in his motorcade.

“This is a very grateful experience for us Timorese because we are almost 95% Catholic and during our fight for independence, the Catholic Church was a big part of our independence,” Ildefonso da Cruz Barreto, a 29-year-old Catholic faithful said from the crowd.

The overwhelmingly Catholic East Timor, one of the world’s poorest countries, had eagerly awaited Francis’ arrival, which came on the heels of the 25th anniversary of the U.N.-backed referendum that paved the way for independence from Indonesia.

The 87-year-old Francis arrived in Dili from Papua New Guinea to follow in John Paul’s footsteps and open the third leg of his trip through Southeast Asia and Oceania.

President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, two of East Timor’s most revered independence heroes, greeted Francis at the airport and met with him privately.
