(Reporter: On Iran, you said you hoped for a meeting with Iran or the Iranian president in the not too distant future – can you give us some sense of what you mean by that? Does that stretch as far as the US election in November?)

STORYLINE:
The head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog on Monday said that its inspectors had not seen a big increase in nuclear enrichment by Iran.

“What we see is that there is some work, but nothing that indicates a rush to a fast implementation of a big increase in terms of enrichment production,” Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told reporters.

Speaking on the sidelines of the agency’s board of governors’ meeting in Vienna, Grossi also expressed his hope to meet with Iran’s new reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian before the US elections in November.

Since the breakdown of the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2019, the Middle Eastern nation has continued to enrich uranium to near weapons grade level.

Iran has long denied ever seeking nuclear weapons and continues to insist that its program is entirely for peaceful purposes.
