3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The waters of the Taiwan Strait, in the order from both sides of the strait to the sea, are China’s internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. China respects the right of navigation enjoyed by all countries in the relevant waters in accordance with Chinese law and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but we are firmly opposed to provocations by countries that jeopardize China’s sovereignty and security under the banner of freedom of navigation.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“First, China is very shocked by the relevant information released by the Philippine media. This practice has ulterior motives. We have noted the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia in this regard. As parties to the South China Sea issue, China and Malaysia have been maintaining close communication on the proper handling of differences and disputes between the two sides, and jointly made contributions to the development of China-Malaysia relations and the peace and stability of the region.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The United States concocted the so-called updated version of the Hong Kong Business Advisory to groundlessly slander Hong Kong’s national security laws and discredit Hong Kong’s business environment. China firmly opposes this and strongly condemns it.”

STORYLINE:
China on Monday spoke out against "provocations" in the Taiwan Strait, following reports of plans for two German warships to sail through the area later this month.
If it goes ahead, the passage of the two ships would be the first such journey by German navy vessels in more than two decades.
Responding to a question about the ships, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China is "firmly opposed to provocations by countries that jeopardize China’s sovereignty and security under the banner of freedom of navigation.”
The U.S. and virtually every other country, along with Taiwan, considers the Strait international waters.
However, Beijing regards the self-ruled island as its own territory, and thus claims the Taiwan Strait to be Chinese.
At the briefing, Mao also said China was “shocked” by a Philippine news outlet’s disclosure of a classified Chinese diplomatic note to the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing, saying it had “ulterior motives.”
In the note delivered in February, China accused Malaysia of infringing upon its sovereignty with gas and oil exploration in the disputed South China Sea, according to a report published on August 29 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Last week, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said it carried out an internal investigation into the leak.
Separately, Mao hit out at the U.S. for its renewed warning of heightened risks facing businesses and individuals operating in Hong Kong posed by Beijing’s sweeping National Security and the Safeguarding National Security ordinance adopted in March in the region.
The updated Hong Kong Business Advisory, issued last Friday, said the enforcement of relevant laws “further erode fundamental freedoms and protections for human rights” in the business hub.
