STORYLINE:
People gathered outside Rafidia hospital in Nablus on Sunday for the possible hand over of the body of an American woman who was shot by Israeli soldiers at a demonstration in the West Bank, according to witnesses.

It was unclear Sunday if the body of 26-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi of Seattle, who was also a Turkish citizen, would be handed over, as the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan was closed until further notice following a shooting attack that killed three Israelis.

Israeli soldiers shot the woman on Friday as she attended a demonstration against settlements in the West Bank.

She was shot while posing no threat to Israeli forces and during a moment of calm after clashes earlier in the afternoon, an eyewitness said.

Two Palestinian doctors said Eygi was shot in the head.

The U.S. government confirmed Eygi’s death but did not say whether the recent graduate of the University of Washington had been shot by Israeli troops.

The White House said it was “deeply disturbed” by the killing of a U.S. citizen and called on Israel to investigate what happened.

The Israeli military said it was looking into reports that troops had killed a foreign national while firing at an “instigator of violent activity” in the area of the protest.

Eygi’s killing comes amid a surge of violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack out of Gaza triggered the war there.

Israel has launched near-daily military arrest raids into dense Palestinian residential areas, and there has been a rise in Israeli settler violence and Palestinian attacks on Israelis.

More than 690 Palestinians have been killed, according to Palestinian health officials.
