STORYLINE:
Catholics and other well wishers gathered on the streets of East Timor’s capital Dili on Saturday, to rehearse their welcome songs and dances ahead of the arrival of Pope Francis to the small Southeast Asian country on Monday.
Streets were cleaned by the capital’s workers while Vatican and Timorese flags were raised and posters hung up.
The Pope’s arrival in East Timor marks the 3rd leg of the longest trip of his pontificate.
The Papal visit is a prime opportunity to put the world’s spotlight on East Timor, the youngest country in Asia where 97% of its 1.3 million population identify as Catholic – some 1.26 million, making it the country with the highest percentage of Catholics outside of Vatican City.
