Almost thirty years ago, a journalist in India’s northern state of Bihar interviewed a group of village midwives who told a shocking story.
Speaking on camera, these women admitted that they routinely murdered new-born baby girls on the orders of the girls’ families.
These shocking confessions — unseen until now — are the starting point for a documentary that explores the disturbing history of infanticide in rural India.
But the film does not end with the killings. This is also a story about a remarkable campaign to save baby girls from being murdered at birth — a campaign that relied upon the very midwives who had carried out the killings.
