4. Various of farmer checking bee crates
5. SOUNDBITE (Kurdish) Hoshiyar Jassim, beekeeper from Gara area in Dohuk:
"Our situation is very bad. We cannot take our bees to the places we want, to their (natural) environment, where there are plenty of flowers and plants. We can’t go there because of the fighting between the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and the Turkish army. It’s been many years, around 10 years, that we’ve been prevented from entering those areas."
6. Man tasting honey
7. Various of beehives
8. Wide of mountain
9. SOUNDBITE (Kurdish) Hoshiyar Jassim, beekeeper from Gara area in Dohuk:
"We aren’t even allowed to go over there, even though it’s very close, right? But we can’t go because the Turkish army is there. It stretches all the way to the top of Mam Rash (mountain). The area has become a prison for us, especially in the Amedi district with its two townships, Deralook and Shiladize. I swear, you could say we’re living in a prison here."
10. Farmer preparing smoke to use for calming the bees during hive inspections
11. Various of farmer pumping smoke over beehive
12. Farmer cutting honey combs
13. SOUNDBITE (Kurdish) Zuwar Sediq, beekeeper from Dohuk:
"We were forced to escape, and we couldn’t even bring our bees with us. We couldn’t save them. The bees were left in our village. There were around 100 beehives. We only managed to bring a few of them, and now we raise them here in the village, as you can see. But it’s useless. It’s not the same as raising them (back) in the village, in the mountain. The production is very low, and the quality isn’t the same."
14. Various of woman checking honey quality
15. Bees at entrances of hives
16. SOUNDBITE (Kurdish) Zekiya Mohammed, vice president of Bee Farmers Association in Dohuk:
"We produced 300 tons of honey in 2022. But it dropped to 170 tons in 2023, and then to 150 tons in 2024. The reason for this is the situation in our society and the region, which is facing bombing by Turkish drones and the PKK fighting."
17. Beekeeper tending to hive
18. Wide of mountain and trees
19. Establishing shot of mayor Rizgar Ubaid of Shiladize town in Dohuk
20. SOUNDBITE (Kurdish) Rizgar Ubaid, mayor of Shiladize town in Dohuk:
"The fighting continues in our area, and out of 92 villages, only 7 are still inhabited. This means 85 villages have been completely abandoned and are lifeless. Because of this war and instability, every aspect of our citizens’ lives has been affected, whether it’s tourism, agriculture, or animal and honey production."

STORYLINE:
Honey production in Iraq’s Dohuk province, in the northern region, has dropped by half over the past two years due to the fighting between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, locals say.
Beekeepers near the town of Amedi were forced to abandon their areas and move their beehives from the mountains to nearby villages.
"Our situation is very bad. We cannot take our bees to the places we want, to their (natural) environment, where there are plenty of flowers and plants," said beekeeper Hoshiyar Jassim.
"We can’t go because the Turkish army is there," he added.
