“I heard that your meeting in Beijing went well. Both parties made it clear that for the next step we should work together, which sent a positive signal that China and the United States – the two big countries – should and can cooperate.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) John Podesta, Senior Advisor to President Biden for International Climate Policy at the White House:
“We discussed the importance of a successful COP29, including on the multilateral issues. We have some differences on where we start, for example, on climate finance. But I think that we narrowed the ground there. We made plans for a summit on non-CO2 gases, methane, N2O, hydrofluorocarbons. They get less attention, but they are fully half of what’s causing global warming.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) John Podesta, Senior Advisor to President Biden for International Climate Policy at the White House:
“We took stock of where we are on the 2030, our respective 2030 NDCs, and hopefully we can discuss that a little bit more in depth and discuss preparation for ambitious 2035 NDCs, which I know the U.S. is preparing for. So I would just in summary say that, notwithstanding some frictions in our bilateral relationship, we can find places to cooperate for the good of our people and the good of our planet.”

STORYLINE:
United State climate envoy John Podesta visited China this week as the world’s two largest greenhouse gas emitters try to reach some consensus ahead of the United Nations climate change summit in November.

Podesta met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday before he wraps up his three-day visit to Beijing where he and his counterpart Liu Zhenmin co-chaired the meetings to discuss domestic climate policies of both countries.

Wang during his opening remarks said Podesta’s meeting with Liu “sent a positive signal that China and the United States, the two big countries, should and can cooperate.”

Podesta said they discussed issues of climate financing, measures on how to curb other greenhouse gases than CO2, and NDC or Nationally Determined Contributions, a target set by each country to reflect their climate ambition under the Paris Agreement.

Climate change has been one of few issues that China and the U.S. could collaborate on.

The world’s two largest economies spar over human rights, trade policy and the issue of Taiwan.
