STORYLINE:
Rigoberto Román Miranda Orozco faced a Guatemalan court on Thursday that will decide whether or not to authorize his extradition to face six charges in a U.S. court for allegedly participating in the smuggling of at least four Guatemalans, three of whom died inside a trailer abandoned in Texas in 2022, in which a total of 53 migrants suffocated to death.

With his head down, Miranda Orozco did not speak to anyone but his lawyers, who argued before the court that his client had not participated in the crimes the United States has accused him of.

The United States accuses Miranda Orozco of leading a structure that coordinated human trafficking from Guatemala to the north.

Miranda Orozco, 47, was arrested on August 6 in the department of San Marcos, where he is originally from, along with six other Guatemalans, alleged members of the organization who will be tried in Guatemala.

The court set September 11 as the date for its decision on whether or not to accept the extradition. Until then, Miranda Orozco was sent to a prison. Once the ruling is known, it can be appealed by the defendant.
