STORYLINE:
The Israeli army resumed operations in the West Bank city of Tulkarem on Tuesday.

Bulldozers and army jeeps are moving through the city, which is now deserted with stores closed and residents staying at home.

The large-scale raid, which includes the destruction of infrastructure, airstrikes, and gun battles, is focused on urban refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarem, located in the northern part of the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that 29 people, including five children, have been killed since the operation began last week.

Israel’s incursion has raised concerns among the international community about the potential for the conflict to expand beyond Gaza.

Israel has described the West Bank operation as a strategy to prevent attacks on Israeli civilians, which have increased during the war in Gaza, including near settlements that the international community largely considers illegal.

Since the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza began last October, at least 681 people were killed and about 5,700 were injured in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
