2. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Winfield, The Associated Press:
"Pope Francis is making the longest and most challenging trip of his pontificate. It’s an 11-day visit to four Asian countries: Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore. The trip is confirmation that Asia remains a priority for this pope, especially those countries where Catholics are a minority. That is certainly the case for Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population. We expect that interfaith dialogue and tolerance will be a theme of that leg of the trip. In Papua New Guinea, Francis will be visiting what he likes to call one of the Catholic Church’s peripheries, a poor, remote and very small Pacific island nation. They’ll be checking in on the Argentine missionaries who have been working there for many years. Next up is East Timor, Asia’s newest and youngest country, which just got independence from Indonesia two decades ago. There, though, Francis will be coming face to face with the clergy abuse scandal. The country’s revered independence hero was sanctioned by the Vatican for having sexually abused young boys. The last leg of the trip is Singapore, Asia’s economic powerhouse. We expect Francis will be encouraging the Catholic faithful while also sending a message to China."
