Expanding Access | Bringing Cancer Care Closer to Veterans

VA is working to make comprehensive cancer care accessible for all Veterans, no matter their race, ethnicity, or geographical location. Of the 9 million Veterans receiving VA health care benefits, one third of them live in rural areas. Approximately 60% of rural communities do not have an oncologist. To address this gap, VA’s National TeleOncology service (NTO) allows Veterans to receive world-class oncology care and services, regardless of where they live. VA’s Clinical Cancer Genetics Service (CCGS) provides Veterans with cancer genetic counseling that is readily accessible regardless of where they live, including cancer risk assessment, hereditary germline genetic counseling and testing for Veterans. VA’s Close to Me service brings anti-cancer therapy closer to Veterans’ homes, ensuring that Veterans have easy access to the care they need, where they need it.
