“For a year and a half or a little over a year and a half, we have several females, so even more females that can breed. That’s Katharina and Mo. They joined us from Frankfurt am Main, from Opel Zoo, and they immediately joined in with the breeding programme. And that’s why we can already talk about two (calves) this year. And in about two weeks’ time we’ll even have a third calf, which is really special. Three calves at once and then so close together, that’s really great.”

STORYLINE:
A Berlin zoo on Thursday announced the names of their two new giraffe calves – Berti and Emily.

The Berlin Tierpark announced the names of the boy and girl giraffe calves after locals sent their suggestions in for consideration.

Berti, the male, was 5.9 feet tall and weighed around 60 kg (120 pounds) following his birth. Emily, the female, arrived at 5.7 feet tall.

“For a year and a half or a little over a year and a half, we have several females, so even more females that can breed…in about two weeks’ time we’ll even have a third calf, which is really special," said Berlin Tierpark zookeeper Claudia Walther.

The two calves were seen at their Berlin zoo enclosure on Thursday, Berti contently eating, while Emily was spotted running around.
