STORYLINE:
Protesters marched through the streets of the Ecuadorian capital on Tuesday, demanding authorities comply with a referendum a year ago and end oil extraction in a section of the Amazon where indigenous peoples live, including two groups in voluntary isolation.

Last year Ecuadorians voted against drilling for oil in a protected area of the Amazon, an important decision that would require the state oil company to end its operations in a region that’s home to isolated tribes and is a hotspot of biodiversity.

In a speech to the nearly 100 gathered for Tuesday’s demonstration, the leader of the Waorani tribe, Alicia Cahuiya, cited the result of the vote and claimed that “the government of Ecuador has not fulfilled the commitment it made to Ecuador for the Amazon".

She also called for a representative of her group be included in the commission in charge of planning the closure of oil activities in Yasuni National Park.

In last year’s referendum 58.99% of voters rejected the oil exploration in Block 43, situated within Yasuni National Park.

The Constitutional Court gave the government one year to remove the oil extraction infrastructure in the field called Yasuní ITT.

For the last 10 years, around 57,000 barrels of crude oil have been extracted daily in Yasuní, which, according to official figures, generate annual income of US$1.2 billion for the Treasury.
