STORYLINE:
On Wednesday, Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner maintained that an investigation of an attempted attack on her in 2022 did not try to find those responsible.
Fernández de Kirchner testified on Wednesday as witness in the trial of three people accused of planning the attack.
"This trial is meant to judge the direct perpetrators of the attack, but the intellectual authors and financiers are missing," said the former president (2007-2015) and one of the most powerful political figures of the last two decades.
Fernando Sabag Montiel and his ex-girlfriend Brenda Uliarte are accused of attempted murder, while Nicolás Carrizo is charged as an accessory.
Sabag Montiel attempted to shoot Fernández de Kirchner when his gun jammed. He confessed to planning the attack, while his ex-partner gave inconsistent statements. Carrizo denies any connection.
On September 1, 2022, Sabag Montiel allegedly attempted to fire a gun at the head of the former Peronist president, now 71 years old, in front of what was then her home in Buenos Aires, where hundreds of her followers had gathered to support her.
During her testimony, Fernández de Kirchner said that before becoming a victim of that attack, she was the object of increasing “symbolic violence,” both by judicial investigators who had accused her of corruption and by political sectors and the media.
While she was testifying, dozens of Peronist political followers gathered near the court headquarters to offer their support.
Throughout the investigation of the case, Fernández de Kirchner and her defense have been convinced that opposition sectors had masterminded the attempted assassination.
However, the judicial officials who investigated considered that there was no evidence of the attack’s financing, political planning, or cover-up.
