STORYLINE:
People in Tokyo marked the 79th anniversary of the country’s surrender during World War II on Thursday by visiting the Yasukuni Shrine.

Nearly a hundred people were gathered ahead of the opening of the gates to the shrine, which honours the Japanese war dead.

Victims of Japanese aggression, especially China and the Koreas, see the shrine as a symbol of Japanese militarism because it honors convicted war criminals among about 2.5 million war dead.
