“I am happy to be back here in the country. It is a matter of pride to any athlete to have accomplished the mission. A mission that many doubted as they didn’t think I was going to be able to get the fifth medal. But I’ve always said, I always go for more. I reached my objective and was able to put our flag, shining on the highest mast for the whole world and now there is a record. We are now going to look for more talent.”

STORYLINE:
Mijaín López, el mito cubano de la lucha grecorromana, saludó a sus compatriotas al aterrizar en La Habana el avión que transportaba a la delegación que representó a Cuba en los Juegos Olímpicos.
López se convirtió en el primer atleta de la historia en colgarse cinco medallas de oro en cinco ediciones consecutivas de Juegos Olímpicos en la misma prueba individual.
A pocos días de cumplir los 42 años, el “Terrible” López ganó la final de los 130 kilogramos. También había sido campeón en Beijing 2008, Londres 2012, Río de Janeiro 2016 y Tokio 2020.
Con su quinto título olímpico, el gladiador cubano superó a otras leyendas del deporte como los estadounidenses Michael Phelps (natación), Carl Lewis (salto largo) y Alfred Oerter (disco), así como el danés Paul Elvstrom (vela) y la japonesa Kaori Icho (lucha).
Tras la victoria, oficializó el retiro dejando sus botas en el centro del tapiz.
La noche del lunes, la delegación cubana fue bienvenida con una ceremonia especial a la que acudieron el presidente Miguel Díaz-Canel y las familias de los atletas.
Cuba ganó nueve medallas en total: dos de oro,una de plata y seis de bronce.
