STORYLINE:
Helicopters were aiding efforts to control wildfires raging 2,000 meters above sea level in Bosnia’s Sutjeska National Park on Tuesday.
The fire, which broke out on Sunday, has destroyed trees and forest that had been untouched for hundreds of years.
Fire-fighting crews, which include re-enforcements from Serbia, are battling to control the blaze before it reaches a main road between the towns of Foca and Gacko.
Both towns are crowded with tourists heading to the Croatian city of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast.
Foca’s mayor, Milan Kojadinovic, said firefighters were beginning to bring the fire under control.
"I hope by the end of today, as we now have helicopter re-enforcements, we will be able to get this fire under control,” he said.
The fire has engulfed an area of ancient forest which has been untouched for hundreds of years and is considered one of the main deposits of clean water in eastern Bosnia.
