STORYLINE:
Women in Herat are appreciative of a cafe where they can meet, drink and have a space to socialise.

Cafe owner, 23-year-old Marjan Azizi was a student at a medical university when the Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021.

But now she runs the Latte Cafe in Herat.

"I am very happy that the people of our city are so supportive," Azizi said.

The Taliban marched into Kabul as the internationally backed President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and the security apparatus he presided over dissolved.

Following the Taliban’s arrival, women have been barred from most areas of public life and girls are no longer permitted to stay in school beyond the sixth grade.

The harsh restrictions placed on women in Afghanistan were imposed by the Taliban in 2021, despite initially promising more a moderate rule.

"I am happy to be here because the girls stand on their own feet, a few other girls find the chance to work beside them, I am happy to welcome the girls," said one customer.

"Since the beginning, I am a customer of this cafe because we didn’t have such a place where there is cafe and books available for the women and I am very happy that we have this place," said another customer.

As well as banning girls from middle school, high school and universities, women have also been restricted from most employment.

They are also banned from parks and gyms.
