3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, spokesperson, Ministry of Defense:
“Taiwan is China’s Taiwan. The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s interests and is the first red line that should not be crossed in China-U.S. relations, which brooks no external inference. For some time, the U.S. has been obscuring, hollowing out and distorting the One China principle through arms sales to Taiwan and other approaches, sending a seriously wrong signal to the Taiwan separatist independence forces and severely undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwan separatist independence movement is incompatible with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, like fire and water. Those who connive for and support Taiwan independence will eventually burn themselves and swallow bitter fruit.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, spokesperson, Ministry of Defense:
“The Asia Pacific region is a stage for peace and development, not grounds for geopolitical competition. China is a cooperative partner for all countries, not a challenge to anyone. In disregard of the concerns of regional countries and the international community, the U.S., the UK, and Australia keep sending signals of AUKUS expansion, which severely impacted peace and stability in the Asia Pacific. Many countries are concerned about it.”

“China always advocates the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. We believe differences should be properly handled through dialogue and consultation among countries in the region. We oppose external interference, muscle flexing, provocations and harassment in the South China Sea, and oppose piecing together exclusive circles or bloc confrontations. The Chinese military is closely following relevant moves and will resolutely respond with effective measures. We will never allow anyone to sow chaos in the South China Sea.”

STORYLINE:
China’s defense ministry said Thursday that the U.S. should stop interfering in both Taiwan and the South China Sea, after President Joe Biden signed a foreign aid package that will give billions of dollars in assistance to Taiwan, Ukraine and Israel.
China’s defense ministry’s top spokesperson Wu Qian spoke a day after Biden signed the bill into law, which sets aside $8 billion to counter Chinese threats in Taiwan and the broader Indo-Pacific.
China claims Taiwan as its territory and says it must come under its control. The U.S. government does not support formal independence for Taiwan but is bound by its own laws to provide the island with the means to defend itself.
He also condemned the biggest joint combat exercises between American and Filipino forces in years Monday, in a show of allied firepower near the disputed South China Sea.
