STORYLINE:
Vice President Kamala Harris and her newly-minted running mate, Gov. Tim Walsh kicked off their swing state blitz on Wednesday with campaigns in battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan.
The swing was especially important for Harris and Walz since Biden’s winning coalition from four years ago has showed signs of fraying over the summer — particularly in Michigan, which has emerged as a focal point of Democratic divisions over Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Lingering dissensions in the party were nonetheless on display during Harris’ evening speech in Michigan, when she was interrupted by protesters chanting about the war in Gaza.
At first, Harris said to those trying to disrupt her, “I am here because I believe in democracy and everybody’s voice matters.”
“But I am speaking now,” she said, sparking cheers from most of the audience.
The chants opposing the Israel-Hamas war, which strikes at the heart of parts of suburban Detroit, such as Dearborn, continued, until Harris’ tone changed.
“If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that,” she told them sternly. “Otherwise, I’m speaking.”
