"Four long years after the Justice Department brought this landmark case, which was the biggest antitrust case brought in the US in a quarter century, since the Justice Department went after Microsoft, we finally got a ruling from the judge."

"And he, lo and behold, ruled that Google is an illegal monopolist, something that Google thought that it would never be when it started 25 years ago and they cast Microsoft as the villain. But now Google is the technological bully. So the script has been flipped ironically here."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"What he’s most troubled by are these deals that Google’s been entering in for years with Apple, Samsung and others to make its search engine, which is already dominant, the default search engine. That means it’s like the automatic place when people ask a question, Google’s doing the search, and they’re delivering ads based on that."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"The most likely changes we’re going to see in the market are just going to happen naturally, because we’re at the advent of AI, which is why this decision is particularly perilous for Google, because they can’t afford distractions, because right now they’re already facing new threats from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Microsoft is very hungry. They’re a big investor in Open AI, and they already before this case, saw an opportunity to finally make some headway against Google in search."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press:
"Google is going to appeal and we don’t know how long that’s going to take. What we do know is going to happen is there’s going to be what’s called a remedy phase. That’s the next act in this legal showdown, what’s known as a remedy phase. The first hearing in that is September 6th. But that process is going to take months to happen to. It could take a year just to do that. That’s where the judge is going to decide what kind of changes must be imposed to make a more competitive landscape."

STORYLINE:
A judge ruled that Google’s search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation, a seismic decision that could shake up the internet and hobble one of the world’s best-known companies.

The highly anticipated decision issued by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta comes nearly a year after the start of a trial pitting the U.S. Justice Department against Google in the country’s biggest antitrust showdown in a quarter century.

It represents a major setback for Google and its parent, Alphabet Inc., which had argued that its popularity stemmed from consumers’ overwhelming desire to use a search engine so good at what it does that it has become synonymous with looking things up online.
