STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Somalis gathered at Lido Beach in Mogadishu on Monday to condemn the recent deadly attack on the beach hotel.

Somali Health Minister Ali Haji Adam told the media at a press conference on Sunday that the Friday attack left 37 dead and over 200 injured.

The Somali government organised the protest to honour the victims and show solidarity with those affected by the attack.

Al-Qaida’s East Africa affiliate, al-Shabab, said through its radio station that its fighters carried out the attack.

Protesters marched along the beach area while chanting against al-Shabab.

"I came here to show solidarity and mourn for the precious lives lost at Lido Beach," said Sadia Ahmed, one of the protesters.

Lido Beach, a popular area in Mogadishu, is bustling on Friday nights as Somalis enjoy their weekend.

Omar Elmi, who survived the attack at Lido Beach, said he took part in the protest to express his grief over the loss of life.

Elmi also wanted to show that Somalis would not be intimidated by such violence.

"We cannot be deterred," he said, adding that Lido Beach would soon become a place of happiness once again.

The Lido Beach area has in the past been targeted by militants allied to al-Shabab.

The most recent attack last year killed nine people.
