"I think, as the minister has said, that our responsibility is to ensure that we have emergency supplies and trauma kits (for) all the referral hospitals in the country. And we are working very closely with the Ministry of Health, as well as other partners, to facilitate and to ensure that these supplies are ready for an eventuality. And I think that is testimony of what we see today that we have received this cargo, which is bringing large consignment of trauma kits, just to ensure in Lebanon we do have supplies, we do have enough kits that will manage at least the over 1,000 trauma patients and even more."

STORYLINE:
Medical supplies provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in the Lebanese capital on Monday.

A plane landed at the Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport carrying over 100 pallets of about 32 tons of emergency supplies and trauma kits, said Abdel Nasser Abu Bakr, WHO representative in Lebanon.

“We have taken a decision to raise the readiness of all hospitals and the entire health sector in Lebanon,” said Firas Abiad, Lebanon’s caretaker Health Minister.

The shipment is part of preparations by the medical sector in Lebanon in case of an escalation in the situation with Israel.

The assassinations of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran’s capital, Tehran, and Hezbollah commander Shukur in Beirut have raised tensions in the region.

Israel has been bracing for a retaliation from Iran and its allied militias.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed the group will retaliate for the killing.

The country hosts more than 1 million Syrian refugees.
