STORYLINE:
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Defense Secretary John Healey held talks with Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati and the speaker of parliament Nabih Berri in Beirut on Thursday, during their trip to the Middle East.
In a surprise visit, Lammy and Healey arrived in Beirut aiming to de-escalate growing regional tensions.
The assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday and the strike against senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut on Tuesday threaten to bring further turmoil to the Middle East.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack but suspicion quickly fell on Israel, which has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.
Iran’s supreme leader has vowed revenge against Israel.
Lammy and Healey were in Qatar on Wednesday in their first joint trip together.
