"Covering the triathlon from the water at the Paris Olympics here from the water for the swim portion was very different and very challenging than anything I’ve experienced in the past. This was my third Olympics, now that I’ve covered either the triathlon swim or the marathon swim, which are both open water swim events, from the water, so it’s a position in the water, where you are swimming, and you are floating and you are shooting with the water housing."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldman, The Associated Press:
"But this year was very challenging not so much because of the cleanliness of the river which I know everybody was talking about. I wasn’t worried about that. I was more worried about the current because it is a very fast moving river, it’s very strong and they were worried we might float away. So there were a couple of things we did for that: I brought a longer set of fins that allow me to kick with more power and stay in position, and my water housing here was attached to my right hand with a leash in case it fell out of my grips of my hands, it wouldn’t float down the river. And then my left hand here was tethered to a safety guy standing on the dock."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldman, The Associated Press:
"You had to sort of kick very hard to stay in position and make sure you’re framing was right. And the left hand that was being tethered to the dock was pulling, and you’re trying to focus with that same hand, and then shoot with this (right) hand. And then you want to do sort of split level where half is in the water and half is shooting above, you’re sort of holding your breath and trying not to swallow the river water and look through the viewfinder so all these factors had to be taken into account and you just had to figure it all out."

"I think it went well. It was very challenging, but it was a lot of fun. And It’s not a bad day’s work when you get to go for a swim in the middle of the day, even if it is out here."

STORYLINE:
The Associated Press photographer David Goldman has captured the triathlon event at the last three Olympics.

On Wednesday, he covered the event at the Paris Games from a unique location: the River Seine.

Triathletes entered the river after organizers declared the water safe for swimming following days of concerns about elevated bacteria levels caused by last week’s heavy rains.

The women jumped into the river near the majestic Pont Alexandre III around 0800 local time (0600GMT), with steady rain tapering off just as the athletes splashed into the water.

The men followed just under three hours later.

"Covering the triathlon from the water at the Paris Olympics here from the water for the swim portion was very different and very challenging than anything I’ve experienced in the past," Goldman said.

He explained that he wore a longer set of fins to give him more power to kick and stay in position, and to make sure he didn’t float away, he was tethered with a rope to a safety guy on land.

"It was a lot of fun. And It’s not a bad day’s work when you get to go for a swim in the middle of the day," added Goldman.
