"The quality of water was really good, down the limits, really upper than the limit, and when it rained this morning, there was no consequences because we have no ‘rejection’ (overflow) in Paris. And we have some rejections (overflow), far away from Paris and the time to go (to get to) in Paris is, probably several, several hours. So, there’s no consequences and we know that the quality of water was good enough this morning the results, I already mentioned, was better and better since the last Friday or Saturday."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierre Rabadan, Paris Deputy Mayor:
(Q about Fluidion Open Data Initiative results of E. coli in the Seine 3.5 to 9 times higher than levels set by World Triathlon)
“I have no information on that. We used Fludion last year, we saw that the connection between their result and the reality was no good. So we decided to stop working with them. And we work with another society, ColiMinder’. And we do exactly the same (types of tests) and we are more closer than the reality and the fact that the scientific results we have and the process we get, so, all the condition where unified (aligned) and, the process (water testing) was done, the international federation take, the decision to swim and we know that the quality was good enough for them. And I think athletes have no complaint. They do a wonderful performance, so no worries. I know when we succeed for something, we have to find a way (to criticize it), but it’s just a success, just be happy with that and enjoy the moment.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierre Rabadan, Paris Deputy Mayor:
“It was very difficult the last two years trying to explain the works we did and the reason for the results and facts that we will have. But today we are in that point (moment), and we are really happy to see the competition of women and men, in the place where we wanted that competition in the iconic venue of ‘Pont Alexandre III”. And the best was the exceptional French result, a gold medal for Cassandre Beaugrand and the bronze one for Leo Bergere. It was really good, and I enjoyed the moment."

STORYLINE:
After days of water-quality concerns caused by heavy rains last week put the swimming portion of the Olympic triathlons in doubt, the women dove into the Seine River early Wednesday, followed by the men a few hours later.
The athletes began near the Pont Alexandre III, a bridge that spans the famed Paris waterway.
The women’s race began under a grey sky, with steady rain tapering off just as the athletes splashed into the water.
Some dunked their swim goggles in the Seine before putting them on and heading into the river with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The decision to go ahead with the swim for the triathlon competitions was a big deal for the city, Olympics organizers and the athletes.
Officials undertook an ambitious plan, including 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in infrastructure improvements, to clean up the long-polluted Seine and have been steadfast in their insistence that the swimming portion of the triathlon and the marathon swimming events next week could safely be held in the river.
The organizers said early Wednesday the latest tests of the water showed compliance with quality standards.
That came after days of uncertainty following heavy rain on Friday and Saturday.
