STORYLINE:
Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday blamed opposition candidate, Edmundo González, for protests following the country’s disputed election results.
"Before history, before this constitution, and before the country, I make Mr. (Edmundo) González Urrutia responsible for all that is happening in Venezuela," Maduro said.
The National Electoral Council, which is loyal to the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, has said Maduro won the election.
The opposition says that González secured more than twice as many votes as the incumbent, and that it has voting precinct data to prove it.
The council has yet to release any figures at the polling station level.
As both sides defended their claim to victory, thousands of their supporters took to the streets of the capital, Caracas.
Several foreign governments, including the U.S. and the EU, have held off recognizing the election results.
