We are tired. The house is gone, and then my husband was gone (killed). We left the area only for seven days, and we returned to find the situation like this. Fear God, people, feel for us."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hassan Al-Kharoubi, citizen from Khan Younis:
"On the day of the invasion, I swear to God, we could not take even a t-shirt with us. These are my clothes that I left with, and I am still wearing them now. I came and found this destruction, no tent, no house, or anything left. The tent that we had installed, we have no money to buy a replacement for it."

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Rizq Abu Rouk, citizen from Khan Younis:
"They said there was a withdrawal from Bani Suhaila. I came, and as you can see, there is no tent left. It was my last shelter. Some of the things that we were able to take from the house have now been lost. Now I, my wife, my son and my brothers are homeless. The situation is bad. We have collapsed physically and psychologically. It is enough. If the decision to go to war or peace was in our hands, we would choose peace forever. The situation is bad; I cannot describe the grief that is inside us."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians returned Tuesday to their homes and shelters in Gaza’s southern city Khan Younis after the Israeli military ended its weeklong ground assault on the eastern parts of the city.

People including women and children were seen carrying their belongings amid massive destruction in the area.

Houses, roads and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed.

A cemetery in the town of Beni Suhila was bulldozed.

Rizq Abu Rock rushed back to the area once he heard that the Israeli military withdrew from eastern Khan Younis.

He found that their tent was destroyed.

"It was my last shelter… Now I, my wife, my son and my brothers are homeless. The situation is bad. We have collapsed physically and psychologically," he said.

Hassan Al-Kharoubi was another resident who returned to eastern Khan Younis Tuesday morning.

"I came and found this destruction, no tent, no house, or anything left. The tent that we had installed, we have no money to buy a replacement for it," he said.

The Israeli military launched a new ground assault on eastern Khan Younis earlier in July, three months after it pulled out forces from Gaza’s second largest city.

Hospital officials say emergency workers in Gaza have recovered the bodies of 22 Palestinians found in eastern parts of Khan Younis city after the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area following a weeks-long offensive.

It is not clear when they were killed. Workers have often found bodies in rubble or on the streets after Israeli offensives.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel’s campaign in the territory has now killed more than 39,300 Palestinians and wounded more than 90,000.
