STORYLINE:
For many Venezuelans the results announced by the CNE (National Election Council) were not a shock.
Officials proclaimed Maduro the winner with 51%, to 44% for retired diplomat Edmundo González.
Several foreign governments, including the U.S. and European Union, held off recognizing the results of Sunday’s election, as officials delayed the release of detailed vote tallies.
On Monday morning the capital Caracas was eerily quiet.
“Everyone is sad, disappointed because we have children. I left the country for some years and came back with hope of better days but seems I have to think again, maybe leave again. It is not possible to stay here, it’s like a dictatorship, it became clear yesterday.” said Alexandra Valderrama, a saleswoman in the capital.
The elections had been some of the most peaceful in recent memory.
On Monday many shops did not open, and the opposition has called for calm in the wake of a disappointing night.
Maria Corina Machado, the opposition leader, has declared a landslide victory for her candidate Edmundo González.
Meanwhile President Nicolás Maduro has accused foreign agents of trying to hack the voting system.
