STORYLINE:
Revolutionary leader Raul Castro, accompanied by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, walked to the stage after a brief disagreement on which path would be safer for the 93-year-old Castro to enter Sancti Spiritus Plaza.
Thousands of people waved flags to begin the celebration of the 71st anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks.
Every precaution was taken to protect nonagenarian the leader, including holding the ceremony in the early morning to shield him from the sun and heat.
Castro, dressed in his usual olive green, is one of the few remaining revolutionaries who attacked the barracks.
Despite the failure of the attack and the arrest of the revolutionaries in 1953, the Moncada attack is considered the beginning of the Cuban revolution.
Apart from Raul Castro, three other participants in the attack were also present at Friday’s ceremony: Ramiro Valdés and José Ramón Machado Ventura, all over 90 years old.
The anniversary is happening during economic tension, one of the worst in decades, with food shortages, lack of electricity, and high inflation leading to a wave of migration on the island.
Cuba acknowledged last week that it must dollarize some sectors to generate income.
The 26th of July is a significant date in the island’s history. On this day, Fidel and Raul Castro, along with a group of young people, attempted unsuccessfully to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista.
In 1959, the rebels came into power and began to clash with the United States. As a result, the US imposed sanctions on Cuba, pressuring for a change in the political system.
