4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Biros, Restoration Program Director, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana:
"New oysters will grow on old oyster shells. So over time the reef will grow and it can keep up with sea level rise. It can expand. It really is one of the most effective strategies we have for shoreline stabilization."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Smith, Chief Executive Officer, AmeriCorps:
"It’s so important, I think here to be here today because what we see is not only did those folks make a difference back then 19 years ago, but they’ve stayed in the community. They continue to be involved. They’re helping to run organizations and they turn a year of service into often a lifetime of social action. So we are here to celebrate that spirit of service which is alive and well and strong in Louisiana."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Morgan Randall, Former AmeriCorps Member, Communications Senior Coordinator, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana:
"When the volunteers in the communities that we’ve partnered with see tangible like fruits of our efforts, in this case an entire oyster reef that’s going to protect a culturally significant site for hopefully generations to come, like that’s a really big win. And it’s important for people to be able to see that because it gives them hope that there’s more that we can do."

STORYLINE:
A volunteer-heavy effort to restore some of Louisiana’s eroding coast with recycled oyster shells was part of the scenic backdrop Wednesday for a visit from the head of AmeriCorps, the federal agency that deploys volunteers to serve communities around the nation.
Michael Smith, the CEO of AmeriCorps, visited Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana’s site in the town of Violet, where he got a look at huge piles of oyster shells, many collected from Louisiana restaurants, that are being used to build reefs along the vulnerable coast.
The new reefs also provide new breeding ground for more oysters.(AP video by Stephen Smith and Jack Brook)
